Beyond!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the way to Casper, Lupe was going to go right by a famous landmark from the days of the early pioneers &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Independence Rock<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,028 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> in the Sweetwater River valley.\u00a0 She had been by it before a time or two, but had never stopped to take a look around.\u00a0 Today she had the time, and it seemed like just the sort of thing an adventurous American Dingo ought to do!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11639\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11639\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-11639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe drops by Independence Rock State Historic Site in S central Wyoming.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Independence Rock was once an important landmark on the Oregon, California &amp; Mormon Pioneer trails.\u00a0 Hwy 220 goes right past it now.\u00a0 Just off the highway, there&#8217;s a rest area with bathrooms, water fountains, and shaded picnic tables.\u00a0 A sidewalk leads to displays detailing the history and importance of this site to the pioneers, and on to Independence Rock itself.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP set off on the short stroll.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP stopped to read some of the displays along the sidewalk, but the Carolina Dog had limited patience with that.\u00a0 She wanted to get there and experience Independence Rock for herself!<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5297.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter still around.\u00a0 Near the base of Independence Rock a man was sitting on a bench where the sidewalk divided to make a loop around the rock.\u00a0 He said he had just seen a 4 foot long rattlesnake slither across the sidewalk only a few minutes ago.\u00a0 The rattler appeared to be hunting the numerous gray rabbits hopping about all over the place.<\/p>\n<p>That rattlesnake had the right idea!\u00a0 Lupe was also keenly interested in hunting rabbits!\u00a0 Sadly, party-pooper SPHP didn&#8217;t think racing around in the tall grass among rabbits and rattlesnakes was such a hot idea.\u00a0 A very disappointed Lupe was forced to stay on the leash.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5301.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" permissible to climb right up onto Independence Rock!\u00a0 The best way up was from the NW.\u00a0 Used to climbing mountains, getting to the top was easy for Lupe.\u00a0 She was there in practically Photo looks NNE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe was on her way to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mine Benchmark<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,121 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, the high point of Natrona County.\u00a0 Once again, SPHP was using a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cohp.org\/wy\/Natrona_3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>trip report<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by famed peakbagger <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Edward Earl<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for directions.\u00a0 15 miles N of Arminto was a 4-way intersection.\u00a0 Mr. Earl&#8217;s instructions said to turn L on Bighorn Mountain Road (Natrona County Road No. 109).\u00a0 No. 109 wound W &amp; N for a few miles, then began to climb more steeply.<\/p>\n<p>How far the G6 might be able to get along Bighorn Mountain Road wasn&#8217;t clear.\u00a0 Edward Earl had a Nissan pickup truck, and had reported slipping on a steep uphill section, then having to stop soon afterward at a very muddy spot.\u00a0 He&#8217;d had to walk half a dozen miles from there, just to get to where he&#8217;d originally intended to park.<\/p>\n<p>The road was a bit damp and muddy, but the G6 made it to the top of the steep section just fine.\u00a0 Lupe had an advantage being here in mid-June.\u00a0 Edward Earl&#8217;s trip report was for an ascent of Mine Benchmark dated 5-26-2009.\u00a0 With nearly a month extra of warm, sunny weather to dry things out, there was at least some hope the G6 would be able to get farther than the Nissan had.<\/p>\n<p>The next test came soon.\u00a0 Beyond the steep climb, the road leveled out and reached a small stream 4 or 5 miles from the turn onto Bighorn Mountain Road.\u00a0 From Mr. Earl&#8217;s description, this was likely the muddy point where he&#8217;d had to park the Nissan and continue on foot.\u00a0 The topo map showed this stream as First Waters Creek.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP got out of the G6 for a look.\u00a0 First Waters Creek was only 4 or 5 feet wide and a foot deep, but the bottom appeared rutty.\u00a0 Hmm.\u00a0 It ought to be OK.\u00a0 Lupe stayed outside while SPHP gave it a go.\u00a0 The G6 hit bottom lightly in one of the ruts, but made it across undamaged.\u00a0 Lupe waded over and hopped in.\u00a0 Onward!<\/p>\n<p>Edward Earl mentioned two more streams ahead, still several miles away.\u00a0 Bighorn Mountain Road resumed a steady climb.\u00a0 After a few miles, Lupe reached a high point at a 8,300 foot saddle.\u00a0 So far so good, but soon the South and Middle Forks of Buffalo Creek would have to be crossed.\u00a0 This saddle wouldn&#8217;t be a bad place to park the G6, though, if it became necessary.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11656\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5314.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11656\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5314-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5314.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5314.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5314.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5314.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_5314.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the 8,300 foot saddle. This road would take her W and pass only a short distance S of <strong>Mine Benchmark<\/strong>. The summit isn&#8217;t far away. It&#8217;s right up there on top of the rock formation on the R. target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shirley Mountains High Point<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,151 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-61085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Quealey Benchmark<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color:
