{"id":1155,"date":"2015-07-15T07:48:06","date_gmt":"2015-07-15T13:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=1155"},"modified":"2019-04-09T14:24:25","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T20:24:25","slug":"hesse-mountain-bighorn-mountains-wyoming-8-6-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=1155","title":{"rendered":"Hesse Mountain, Bighorn Mountains, Wyoming (8-6-14)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It seemed like a very long night.\u00a0 SPHP kept waking up expecting it to be dawn, but it wasn&#8217;t.\u00a0\u00a0Finally dawn came.\u00a0 The sky was about 50% clear with some haze &#8211;\u00a0a promising start to the day.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were on USFS Road No. 28 at Merle Creek in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.<\/p>\n<p>Disappointingly, by the time breakfast was done, the sky was completely overcast.\u00a0 SPHP drove Lupe over to USFS Road No. 29 off Hwy 16 near <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/Peak.aspx?pid=56637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hesse Mountain<\/a><\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(10,385 ft.)<\/strong><\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=30018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hazelton Pyramid<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(10,534 ft.)<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0Both peaks\u00a0were socked in the fog with the darkest clouds around.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1151\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/P1050455.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1151\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/P1050455-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Hesse Mountain (L) and Hazelton Pyramid (R). should try Hesse even in the clouds.\u00a0 If the fog lifted, Lupe would go on to Hazelton Pyramid.\u00a0 If not, Hesse Mountain would be Lupe&#8217;s last peakbagging success of her grand summer of\u00a02014 Dingo Vacation to the Canadian Rockies and Beartooths.\u00a0 SPHP took USFS Road No. 444 to Munkres Pass and parked the G6.\u00a0 Lupe\u00a0left for Hesse Mountain at 8:20 AM.\u00a0 It was 48\u00b0F and calm.\u00a0 Hesse Mountain was still in the fog.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1152\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1152\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption with the high point on the left.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There was no trail, but Hesse Mountain is only about 1.25 miles\u00a0SE of\u00a0Munkres Pass as the crow flies.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP climbed through the forest.\u00a0 Eventually Lupe reached tree line.\u00a0 Fog was now swirling around the mountain.\u00a0 At times Lupe and SPHP could see the summit or in other directions.\u00a0\u00a0Visibility was good\u00a0enough to guide Lupe to the top.\u00a0 The area above tree line was dominated by boulder fields interspersed with some grassy areas which became increasingly scarce as Lupe gained elevation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1142\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-1146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Near the summit of Hesse Mountain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe reached the summit of Hesse Mountain and found a cairn there.\u00a0 On the other side of the mountain was a steep drop.\u00a0 Soon fog moved in and completely shut off all views.<\/p>\n<p>Reluctantly, SPHP decided this was it.\u00a0 There was no sense in having Lupe try to go on to Hazelton Pyramid, which was seldom even in view with all the fog.\u00a0 With no trails, if the fog moved in and stayed, it would be easy to get turned around and lost.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t seem that likely, but on the other hand, the Beartooths to the W where Lupe had just come from had been overcast and drippy for several days.\u00a0 The weather in the Bighorns usually comes from that direction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1143\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a Lupe at the Hesse Mountain summit 8-6-14.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe seemed perfectly happy with her ascent of Hesse Mountain.\u00a0 SPHP was happy with it, too.\u00a0 At least Lupe had gotten to the summit of Hesse, even if Hazelton Pyramid had to be left for another day on another dingo vacation.\u00a0 On the way back down, the fog continued to swirl around and come and go.\u00a0 At times, the views were pretty good.\u00a0\u00a0Five or ten minutes later, the clouds would close in again.\u00a0 It felt kind of mystical.\u00a0 Views came and went in unpredictable pleasant\u00a065\u00b0F, still overcast, calm and almost foggy.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP had lunch near the stone pillar at Munkres Pass before heading out.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP hatched another peakbagging plan for Lupe.\u00a0 Even though she was about to leave the Bighorn Mountains, she might still go up to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Warren Peaks<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(6,650 ft.)<\/strong><\/span> or climb <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inyan Kara<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(6,360 ft.)<\/strong><\/span> in the Black Hills of Wyoming on the way home.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0 At a gas station convenience store in Buffalo, WY there was news on the TV about\u00a0severe storms and flooding in the Black Hills.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP just cruised E on I-90 back to the Black Hills of South Dakota and home.\u00a0 The 74th annual Black Hills Motorcycle Classic was going on in Sturgis, SD.\u00a0 It was kind of fun to be packed in with huge numbers of motorcyclists flocking to the area.\u00a0 There were still big clouds around, but the storms seemed to be over in the Black Hills by the time Lupe reached them.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before 6:00 PM, Lupe arrived home.\u00a0 Her great summer of 2014 Dingo Vacation all the way to the Canadian Rockies and back was over.\u00a0 Lupe had been gone 23 days, 22 nights\u00a0and traveled 3,288 miles in the G6.\u00a0 Dingoes are very practical.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t dwell on the past or\u00a0statistics much.\u00a0 If Lupe was sad that it was all over, she didn&#8217;t show it.\u00a0 As soon as\u00a0she got home,\u00a0Lupe happily\u00a0ran next door to Dog Heaven to hit up the neighbors for a treat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1150\" style=\"width: 660px\"
