The highest point in the distance on the L is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=34019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Northeast Cicero Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,240 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>. Photo looks SW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hurry, hurry!\u00a0 Now it was a race against time.\u00a0 The sun sank ever lower, then disappeared.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP made good time, but twilight was fading fast as Lupe came back up Grand Vista Draw.<\/p>\n<p>Looper followed USFS Road No. 291.3A S beyond its junction with No. 291.3K.\u00a0 For a while she stuck with it, but when the road turned SW it was decision time.\u00a0 Staying on the road meant miles and miles of extra distance.\u00a0 The other option was to bushwhack SE to the E edge of the limestone plateau country on the most direct route to Bear Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP led Lupe SE.\u00a0 Leaving the road was contrary to long-standing rules against trying to bushwhack after dark. \u00a0 On the other hand, Lupe had already traveled much of this same territory earlier in the day.\u00a0 SPHP felt confident that having the E rim to follow meant she wouldn&#8217;t get lost.<\/p>\n<p>Faint twilight lingered only far to the W now.\u00a0 Stars shone above, but no moon.\u00a0 Black night took over.\u00a0 Somehow the Carolina Dog always seems able to navigate in the dark without any problem.\u00a0 Not SPHP, who was walking unseeing straight into waist-high pines.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP ran into a barbed wire fence.\u00a0 No damage done.\u00a0 Lucky!\u00a0 SPHP was blind as a bat.\u00a0 Better bring out the flashlight.\u00a0 The fence was good news, actually, it meant Lupe was getting close to the E rim.\u00a0 Deadfall timber was bad here, though.\u00a0 The Komperdell trekking poles were enormously helpful!\u00a0 SPHP would have tripped and fallen a jillion times without them.<\/p>\n<p>After getting past the worst of the deadfall, Lupe reached the E rim!\u00a0 She saw a great many lights glittering far to the NE.\u00a0 That was Rapid City!\u00a0 An amazing number of lights were also scattered toward the SE in the general direction of Custer, but the town was not in view.\u00a0 Guided by the lights of Rapid City, Lupe and SPHP worked S along the E rim.\u00a0 Sooner or later, Looper would come to Bear Mountain again.<\/p>\n<p>Despite initial confusion over exactly where Lupe was upon reaching a road, she had made it!\u00a0 She was back at Bear Mountain.\u00a0 A cold N wind still blew up here.\u00a0 Despite the wind, Lupe returned to the fire lookout tower.\u00a0 So what if it was cold, windy and dark?\u00a0 She&#8217;s a peakbagging Dingo, and this was another successful ascent!\u00a0 <em>(End &#8211;
