Yesterday Lupe had nearly reached the top of the mountain, but failed to find a way up the last few tens of feet. She wasn&#8217;t going to make another attempt today. Photo looks WNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>I hope we have better luck today at South Sawtooth, Loop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SPHP spoke without much conviction.\u00a0 Those contours on the topo map were as tight near the top of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=76857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">South Sawtooth Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(8,723 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> as they were at Eagle Peak.\u00a0 Success was far from guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>Success <em><strong>was<\/strong><\/em> guaranteed at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=68643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Prairie Dog Hill<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,400 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> a mile N of Esterbrook.\u00a0 County Road No. 5 went practically right over the top of it.\u00a0 Lupe sniffed her way through a nearly flat field.\u00a0 Elevation gain to what seemed to be as much the high point as anywhere else was trivial, less than 10 feet.\u00a0 Whoop-de-doo!\u00a0 At least there was a bit of a view.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10678\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4880.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10678\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4880-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4880.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4880.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4880.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4880.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4880.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe on Prairie Dog Hill, a trivial peakbagging accomplishment. It was so flat it was hardly even a hill. At least she had a distant view of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Laramie Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(10,272 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> (L) and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=68644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Eagle Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,167 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> (R). Douglas is the Jackalope capital of the world!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe was disappointed to find that the Jackalope was merely a statue, but as large as the Jackalope was, perhaps that was for the best.\u00a0 In any case, the Carolina Dog was soon ready to move on.<\/p>\n<p>The long drive out Hwy 91 SW of Douglas is one of SPHP&#8217;s favorites for gorgeous western scenery.\u00a0 Lupe likes it for all the cows and horses to bark at along the way.\u00a0 The highway eventually ends and turns to gravel.\u00a0 Many more miles of dusty road eventually brought Lupe to the Curtis Gulch campground along La Bonte Creek.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP parked the G6 near the campground entrance.\u00a0 Lupe set out for South Sawtooth Mountain (10:36 AM, 68\u00b0F) heading SW on USFS Road No. 658.\u00a0 On the way in, SPHP had seen a sign for Big Bear Canyon about 0.33 mile away.\u00a0 Lupe soon reached this side road (USFS Road No. 657.01), which almost immediately led to a ford of La Bonte Creek.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10680\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10680\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4883.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10680\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4883-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4883.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4883.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4883.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4883.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4883.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Almost as soon as Lupe reached USFS Road No. 657.01 to Big Bear Canyon, the road led to this ford of La Bonte Creek. Photo looks SW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The water was high this time of year.\u00a0 Although the surface looked calm, La Bonte Creek was wide at the ford, and over Lupe&#8217;s head.\u00a0 Upstream and downstream, the current was clearly strong.\u00a0 American Dingoes like wading, not swimming, but SPHP knew Lupe could swim if necessary.\u00a0 She ought to be able to manage this crossing.<\/p>\n<p>Still, SPHP wasn&#8217;t thrilled to see the ford.\u00a0 Only 3 days ago, SPHP had bought new boots for this Dingo Vacation, and they weren&#8217;t waterproof.\u00a0 To keep from getting the new boots soaking wet, SPHP decided to take them off and wade the stream barefoot.\u00a0 SPHP stuffed a sock inside each boot, laced them together, and draped a boot over the back of each shoulder with the knotted laces across the throat.<\/p>\n<p>While Lupe watched from shore, SPHP waded into La Bonte Creek.\u00a0 The current was fairly strong, and the water as much as thigh deep.\u00a0 Rocks on the bottom were loose and sometimes slippery.\u00a0 Concentration was required to maintain balance, but SPHP managed to get most of the way across uneventfully.<\/p>\n<p>Was Lupe following?\u00a0 Yes and no.\u00a0 SPHP turned around to see the Carolina Dog still near the opposite shore.\u00a0 She wanted to come, and had waded chest deep into La Bonte Creek, but was reluctant to go any deeper.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10681\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4884-e1507781738948.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10681\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4884-e1507781738948-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4884-e1507781738948.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4884-e1507781738948.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4884-e1507781738948.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4884-e1507781738948.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe waded chest deep into La Bonte Creek, but was afraid to go any deeper.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Loopster was going to need some encouragement.\u00a0 SPHP waded the rest of the way across, then turned around again to call to her.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, desperate not to be left behind, all on her own Lupe had decided to try crossing La Bonte Creek on the downstream side of the ford.\u00a0 The water wasn&#8217;t as deep here, but the current was powerful.\u00a0 SPHP was alarmed to see Lupe neck deep struggling to cross without being swept downstream.\u00a0 Fortunately, her legs were just long enough for her paws to touch bottom.\u00a0 Lupe clawed her way forward despite the current.<\/p>\n<p>In a flash, Lupe was past the moment of danger.\u00a0 She reached much shallower water, and came trotting across just fine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10682\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10682\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4885.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10682\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4885-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4885.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4885.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4885.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4885.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4885.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe trots the rest of the way across La Bonte Creek after clawing her way past a dangerous deeper part on the downstream side of the ford. The creek flowed through it. She had arrived up on the ridge just far enough NE to avoid having to go over <strong>High Point 8401<\/strong>, seen behind her. The open ground on the gently sloping ridge was easier to traverse than going through the forest. The daunting S face crushed hopes that Lupe could reasonably expect to reach the top. The high point of the lower W ridge (L), became Lupe&#8217;s new reduced objective. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP tried to get around the E side of the second rock formation, but a long wall of rock blocked the way.\u00a0 Lupe was forced to retreat back to the W.\u00a0 What could be seen of the rest of the ridge leading to South Sawtooth looked forbidding.\u00a0 The ridge dropped sharply beyond this rock formation, before rising again and continuing N as an impossibly rough series of huge rock outcroppings.\u00a0 No way!<\/p>\n<p>A grassy opening was visible to the W down at the bottom of a valley about 150 feet lower than where Lupe was now.\u00a0 Time to abandon the ridge.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP started W down a fairly steep forested slope.\u00a0 As the ground began leveling out near the bottom, there was movement.\u00a0 Instantly, Lupe dashed away in hot pursuit!<\/p>\n<p>SPHP never had a clear view of what she was after.\u00a0 Whatever it was had a huge lead, and bounded S through the forest at very high speed.\u00a0 Loop never got anywhere close, and soon gave up.\u00a0 SPHP got only tree-broken glimpses.\u00a0 The creature was gray and bounded like a rabbit, but it was far, far larger than any rabbit.\u00a0 Even Lupe was tiny by comparison.<\/p>\n<p>A bear?\u00a0 Are bears still found in the Laramie Mountains?\u00a0 SPHP didn&#8217;t know.\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 Lupe returned with a huge grin on her face, panting hard.\u00a0 That was fun!<\/p>\n<p><em>So what was it, Loop?\u00a0 A bear, or one of those giant jackalopes?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lupe kept smiling, but didn&#8217;t say.\u00a0 Hardly mattered now.\u00a0 It was gone.\u00a0 Puppy, ho!\u00a0 Onward!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP reached the meadow at the bottom of the valley, crossed it to the W, and went over a small rise to another valley.\u00a0 This valley was mostly forested, and looked like it would take Lupe up to the saddle between South Sawtooth Mountain and the high point on the ridge to the W.\u00a0 Lupe turned N and began to climb.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10694\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10694\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4899-e1507845570797.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10694\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4899-e1507845570797-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4899-e1507845570797.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4899-e1507845570797.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4899-e1507845570797.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_4899-e1507845570797.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe on her way up the valley leading to the saddle between <strong>South Sawtooth Mountain<\/strong> (R) and the high point on the ridge to the W (L). She had followed the broad ridge from there over to the meadows seen on the L on the way to the mountain. On the way back S, she would stay down in the forest on the near (W) side of the same ridge. All she had to do now was follow this road back to No. 657.01, which would take her back down Big Bear Canyon.
