Start 10:06 AM, 67\u00b0F, USFS Road No. 304 near the lower end of Tree Draw, about 4 miles S of Deerfield Road<\/em><\/p>\n

Well, this was it!\u00a0 Lupe trotted happily along the road leading up Tree Draw.\u00a0 At least there was some shade.\u00a0 It was already warm out.\u00a0 Only a few\u00a0little white clouds dotted the sunny blue sky.\u00a0 Lupe’s pink tongue dangled so far out of\u00a0her mouth, it looked like it ought to belong to a considerably larger Dingo.<\/p>\n

Lupe was destined to spend a good deal of the day panting.\u00a0 Summer was here!\u00a0 Due to the heat, Expedition No. 207 would be her last Black Hills Expedition until cooler weather arrives in the fall.<\/p>\n

The road went W for 0.5 mile, then turned S for 0.375 mile.\u00a0 Lupe\u00a0was now approaching the upper end of Tree Draw.\u00a0 The road angled SW and started climbing more steeply.\u00a0 It\u00a0faded away\u00a0entirely\u00a0at a barbed wire fence.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe ducked under\u00a0the fence,\u00a0and quickly reached a minor pass.\u00a0 This was the saddle NNW of Peak<\/span> 6720<\/span><\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0her first peakbagging destination for the day.<\/p>\n

A broad, gently rounded ridge led SSE up to the top of the mountain.\u00a0 On the way, Lupe dodged scattered deadfall timber.\u00a0 Near the summit, the deadfall was worse and had fallen over the barbed wire fence, which unfortunately came up here, too.\u00a0 SPHP lifted Lupe over the dangerous downed fence.<\/p>\n

At the N end of the first sizable rock outcropping she came to, Lupe reached the true summit of Peak<\/span> 6720<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The summit ridge sloped gradually down toward the SSE.\u00a0 Beyond a gap of relatively level ground were more rock formations.\u00a0 Lupe left the true summit to explore them, too.<\/p>\n

Fewer trees\u00a0grew around the rock formations S of the true summit.\u00a0 Lupe enjoyed better views from here, even though she wasn’t quite as high on the mountain as before.\u00a0 She could see Sylvan Hill<\/span><\/a> (7,000 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> off to the SE where she’d been only a week ago on Expedition No. 206.<\/p>\n

It hadn’t taken long to get to Peak 6720, so Lupe wasn’t ready\u00a0for much of a break yet.\u00a0 She\u00a0remained on the summit ridge\u00a0only 20 minutes.\u00a0 That was long enough to get a drink, scramble around on the rocks some, and\u00a0see the views.<\/p>\n

Medicine Mountain<\/span><\/a> (6,878 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, 2 miles to the SSW,\u00a0was next on\u00a0the Carolina Dog’s\u00a0peakbagging agenda.\u00a0 Lupe left Peak 6720 heading straight on down the SW slope.\u00a0 Progress was slow at first.\u00a0 SPHP had to navigate a band of loose rock directly\u00a0below the spine of the mountain.\u00a0 This was followed by a much longer band of deadfall timber.\u00a0 The deadfall was considerably worse here than on the way Lupe had gone up.<\/p>\n

Loose rocks and deadfall were left behind, though,\u00a0well before Lupe reached the floor of the valley to the W.\u00a0 A dirt road in the valley headed straight for Medicine Mountain.<\/p>\n

Loop had about a mile to go to reach USFS Road No. 297 down by Negro Creek, but the dirt road she was on veered off onto the W (R) slope of the valley\u00a0after only half that distance.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog left the road to\u00a0remain in the valley instead.\u00a0 Following an old cow path, she went around the E side of a large fenced area on the valley floor.<\/p>\n

When a spring and small creek appeared, Lupe made good use of them.<\/p>\n

Lupe reached USFS Road No. 297.\u00a0 She was halfway from Peak 6720 to Medicine Mountain.\u00a0 Negro Creek, a small stream, but much larger than\u00a0the tiny tributary in the valley she’d just come through, was flowing through an interestingly shaped pond on the other (SW)\u00a0side of the road.\u00a0\u00a0The pond was home to a\u00a0family of Canadian geese.<\/p>\n

Lupe and SPHP trudged S on USFS Road No. 297\u00a0far enough\u00a0to get past a barbed wire fence before leaving the road to cross Negro Creek.\u00a0 While SPHP jumped across, Lupe hopped right in the creek and laid down.\u00a0 She then got up, and strolled up and down the creek a few times while drinking the cold water.\u00a0 When\u00a0the Carolina Dog\u00a0felt sufficiently refreshed, she leapt out of the creek\u00a0to start climbing Medicine Mountain.<\/p>\n

The day was hot.\u00a0 At least,\u00a0it was hot for climbing mountains.\u00a0 Despite her revitalizing dip in Negro Creek, Lupe’s tongue was soon hanging out again.\u00a0 The heat sapped SPHP’s energy.\u00a0 Most of the mountain was forested, but Lupe came to\u00a0a few\u00a0sunny fields on the way up, too.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP made numerous short\u00a0rest stops in shady places.<\/p>\n

Lupe explored the forest while SPHP kept chugging slowly up Medicine Mountain.\u00a0 There wasn’t much deadfall until almost to the top.\u00a0 Lupe arrived at the base of a narrow rock outcropping after coming up the N ridge.\u00a0 The outcropping looked only 20 feet high.\u00a0 A route existed where\u00a0SPHP might be able to scramble directly\u00a0up.<\/p>\n

No problem with the little scramble, but the first 20 feet\u00a0led\u00a0only to a false summit. However,\u00a0Lupe didn’t have much more to go.\u00a0\u00a0 Loop and SPHP worked a little higher along the E side of a rocky ledge, while proceeding S.\u00a0 In a couple of minutes, Lupe\u00a0was at\u00a0the top of Medicine Mountain’s N summit.\u00a0 A line of rocks of roughly equal elevation along the ledge\u00a0provided terrific views to the N.<\/p>\n

This time, break first –\u00a0then views.\u00a0 Lupe had water and Taste of the Wild.\u00a0\u00a0An apple, as usual, for SPHP.\u00a0 Lupe curled up in the shade of a tree, surrounded by delicate\u00a0white wildflowers.\u00a0 Medicine Mountain was a busy place.\u00a0 Flies buzzed, bees hummed, butterflies chased each other in dizzying circles.<\/p>\n

After a 10 minute rest, Loop\u00a0and SPHP were\u00a0ready for a look around.\u00a0 From the rocks of the N ledge, Lupe\u00a0could see\u00a0in every direction except S.\u00a0 The best views were toward the N & W.<\/p>\n

So far, Lupe had only made it to the lower N summit of Medicine Mountain.\u00a0 If she wanted to see the views to the S and complete her peakbagging goal, she would have to go to the mountain’s true summit.\u00a0 A saddle with considerable deadfall timber led over to the higher S summit, which wasn’t far off.\u00a0 Lupe could be there in minutes.<\/p>\n

Once she was across the saddle, Lupe found a short, faint trail leading up the NW side of the S summit.\u00a0 The highest point on Medicine Mountain<\/a><\/span> (6,878 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0proved to be occupied by a young aspen tree.<\/p>\n

The best views from the S summit were toward the rugged country around Black Elk Peak<\/a><\/span> (7,231 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0to the SE.<\/p>\n

Looper could see a long way to the S.<\/p>\n

Lupe spent a little while near the true summit of Medicine Mountain.\u00a0 However, if she wanted to have enough time to\u00a0actually get to Peak 6680 and Copper Mountain,\u00a0she couldn’t dilly dally too long.\u00a0\u00a0Disappointingly, a\u00a0little sniffing around revealed no medicine on Medicine Mountain, so Lupe moved on.\u00a0 She took the faint path leading back to the saddle, and began a descent down the mountain’s W slope.<\/p>\n

The W slope was moderately steep and full of deadfall timber.\u00a0 Lupe was nearly down to a huge field in the next valley before she was out of it.\u00a0 She continued W across the field, and headed for a saddle ESE of Peak 6680.\u00a0 The saddle and much of the rest of the way up were covered with a forest of dense\u00a0young pines 10 to 15 feet high.<\/p>\n

The young pine forest would have been difficult to travel through, but fortunately, a series of lanes free of trees existed\u00a0by which it was possible to weave up the mountain mostly unhindered.\u00a0 As Lupe approached the summit of Peak 6680, she came to an older forest and started seeing rock outcroppings.<\/p>\n

Lupe saw a great many wild irises on Expedition No. 207. She found these on the W slope of Medicine Mountain<\/strong> on her way to Peak 6680<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Lupe had been to Peak<\/span> 6680<\/a><\/span><\/strong> once before, way back on Expedition No. 96 on 9-20-14.\u00a0 It had been so long ago, SPHP couldn’t remember what the summit was like.\u00a0 Lupe rediscovered a 150 foot long\u00a0summit ridge oriented E\/W with large rocks scattered along the N edge where the slope below was steepest.\u00a0 This whole ridge was forested, but a few spots offered Loop glimpses of distant views.<\/p>\n

Lupe had come up at the E end of\u00a0Peak 6680’s\u00a0summit ridge.\u00a0 The ridge was roughly level, but with slightly higher points at each end.\u00a0 Lupe could see a rock at the far W end which looked like it might be the true summit.<\/p>\n

Naturally,\u00a0the American Dingo\u00a0had to go check it out.<\/p>\n

Although it wasn’t really clear if the E or W high point was the true summit of Peak 6680, Lupe had now been to both.\u00a0 She could now claim peakbagging successes at\u00a03 different mountains today.\u00a0 SPHP was pretty certain she still had time to get to Copper Mountain, too.<\/p>\n

Copper Mountain was 2 miles due N.\u00a0 Loop wasted no time getting started.\u00a0 She went E back a little beyond the rocks at Peak 6680’s\u00a0E high point, before turning N.\u00a0\u00a0She traveled\u00a0down to a very wide saddle leading to the long\u00a0S ridge that would take her to Copper Mountain.\u00a0 It was a bushwhack all the way through the forest until she came to a dirt road upon attaining the S ridge.<\/p>\n

Now Lupe and SPHP could make good time.\u00a0 The dirt road followed the top of the ridge to Sixmile Road (USFS Road No. 301), a major gravel road.\u00a0 Lupe crossed\u00a0No. 301\u00a0continuing N before eventually turning E.\u00a0 The sun was getting low, but would still be up for another hour or so, when Lupe reached the cliffs at the SE end of Copper Mountain<\/a><\/span> (6,920 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The last time Lupe had been here was 14 months ago, when she’d first met her mountaineering friend Jobe Wymore<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 Jobe had used\u00a0Lupe’s Black Hills scouting services, and come all the way from the west coast to visit Odakota Mountain.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP had then gone with Jobe all the way to the Wildcat Hills of Nebraska<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Fun times, and it was fun to think about them again\u00a0now!\u00a0 Neither Lupe nor SPHP had ever met a real mountaineer before.\u00a0\u00a0Jobe\u00a0had turned out to be\u00a0such a great guy with so many interesting tales to tell!\u00a0 Lupe hadn’t seen Jobe since that day, but it was possible she was going to see him again on one of her 2017 Dingo Vacations this summer!<\/p>\n

The evening views from Copper Mountain were beautiful.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP stayed a little while\u00a0admiring them,\u00a0talking about\u00a0Jobe, and remembering.\u00a0 The sun was getting lower, though, and Lupe had a bit of a bushwhack ahead of her to get back to the saddle above Tree Draw near Peak 6720.<\/p>\n

Lupe’s return trip went fine.\u00a0 The heat of the day was gone.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were both energized.\u00a0 Lupe saw many deer, a few squirrels, and one giant deer (elk) on the way.\u00a0 She had a blast!\u00a0 She made such good progress, she even had time for a quick side trek back up to the top of Peak 6720 to see the sun set.<\/p>\n

Expedition No. 207 marked the end of\u00a0Lupe’s\u00a0Black Hills expeditions for a while.\u00a0 The first of her splendid Summer of 2017 Dingo Vacations full of more distant adventures would be starting soon!\u00a0 (9:11 PM, 52\u00b0F)<\/em><\/p>\n
